Sports Buddies is a great way to get involved in mentoring by doing what you love to do: play ball, shoot hoops, run the bases, go fishing, or share your vast knowledge of sports trivia/stats. Sports Buddies is a chance for Bigs (mentors) and Littles (mentees) to enjoy sports together. Sports teach life skills, goal setting, character, and sportsmanship.
Sports Buddies provides opportunities for adults to help build friendships and model good sportsmanship and provides the opportunity for youth to experience sporting and recreational events that were once out of reach.
Participants will have access to tickets to sporting events on the professional, semi-professional and collegiate levels.
It's not hard to love sports and want to make a difference in someone's life, but to make Sports Buddies as powerful as it is, here are the few things we require of our volunteers:
· A commitment to meet with a child 3 to 4 times a month for 12 months
· A willingness to get involved in spectator and participatory events
– either as a player or a fan
Research shows a child's involvement in sports helps them to improve their social interaction, increase their confidence, and improve their listening skills and health. -University of Michigan
All you need to do is show up and have fun. When you do, you'll be helping a kid - someone who'll look up to you and whose life you can change just by playing ball. Love sports? Come on ... it'’s game time!
