Start Something!

A non-mentoring volunteer is: Someone who is devoted to the mission of Big Brothers Big Sisters and plays a vital role in its success by offering their talents to promote the agency, recruit supporters and assist with events in the community.

Non-mentoring volunteers can range from current and former Bigs, parents/guardians of Littles to community members who are passionate about carrying out the vision of Big Brothers Big Sisters. We need your help in advancing our cause and helping us fulfill our mission of helping children reach their full potential by providing positive growth experiences through professionally supported, one-to-one mentoring relationships with caring, trained volunteers. Our non-mentoring volunteers perform a variety of services for us – we will work with your schedule and find a fit for your talents – and we ask that you commit to helping just two times a year.

Below you will find a list of resources and ideas to help you assist BBBS and support the power of mentoring in our communities. If you have any questions about how you can help or would like information sent to you regarding the non-mentoring volunteers, please contact Maija Schmelzer at (320) 258-4535 or mschmelzer@bbbscentralmn.org.

Ways you can be a non-mentoring volunteer

You can help! We know that word-of-mouth referrals are the number one reason others decide to get involved. Here are a few ways non-mentoring volunteers can raise more awareness and support for Big Brothers Big Sisters:

  • Serve on a Big Brothers Big Sisters committee.
  • Help with promoting and organizing Big Brothers Big Sisters events.
  • Give your time. In addition to Big Brothers and Sisters, agency volunteers help out with large mailings, office tasks, staff events and share their unique skills.
  • Use your talents to create ads and other potential marketing/graphic designs for Big Brothers Big Sisters, our programs and events.
  • Write about your experiences in your employee/school/church newsletter (Big Brothers Big Sisters can provide the article).
  • Ask a BBBS employee to come speak to your church, synagogue or faith community.
  • Post flyers or information about BBBS at local businesses or community organizations.
  • Speak at a BBBS Volunteer Orientation or help at a BBBS booth.
  • Help update agency materials, including scrapbooks, match activity lists, photo collages and more.
